Why more detergent does not clean better
Cleaning power comes from surfactants dissolving in water and lifting soil away. Water can only hold so much, so detergent beyond that point never participates in cleaning โ it simply remains. Residue that does not rinse out stiffens fabric and builds up inside the machine, causing odour and mould. Overdosing therefore costs more money and produces a worse result.
Three things decide the right dose
The dose printed on the package assumes average soil, average water hardness and a standard load. Change any of those and the dose should change. Softer water needs less; a half load needs half. Increase the amount only for genuinely dirty laundry, not as a habit.
- Load size: half a drum means half the detergent
- Soil level: increase only for heavy soil
- Water hardness: soft-water areas can go below the label dose
- Temperature: warmer water makes detergent more effective
Make measuring a habit
The most practical saving is simply using a measuring cap. Pouring by eye almost always exceeds the label dose. Keep the cap with the bottle, and once you have found your dose, mark that line with a permanent pen so you never have to measure again โ especially useful with liquid detergents, whose moulded markings are often hard to see.
How to find your dose
Rather than guessing once, reduce in steps. Start at the label dose and cut gradually, checking afterwards for odour, residue or stiffness. The amount just before problems appear is right for your home. Since water hardness and machines differ, this is the most accurate method.
- Week 1: use the label dose to set a baseline
- Week 2: try 80% of it and check the result
- Week 3: if fine, try 70%
- Rule: if odour or residue appears, go back one step
What else drops with it
Correct dosing also cuts rinse water, because excess detergent demands extra rinse cycles. Fewer rinses means lower water and electricity bills and shorter cycles. The detergent itself is not a large sum, but counted together with water, power and time the difference is noticeable.
